. tavis: as hurricane sandy continues to churn, our thoughts are with those who are dealing with loss of power. it has created an awkward situation with the presidential campaign just days to go. we are grateful jonathan martin joins us this evening. good he is the senior reporter for public ago. thank you for being here. fellowalk about the citizens impacted by this dangerous storm, your sense on how the campaigns navigate these storms. good >> it is a slow rolling reaction, starting yesterday. both campaigns have been canceling more of events, and both will be dark until at least tomorrow. i have talked with historians, trying to figure out when the campaign for president of the united states -- will effectively shut down while folks are voting and a week before: open nationally. it is a remarkable turn of events, and i do not think anyone knows what the outcome will be. tavis: i am a sports guy, so in any particular game, if there is something that causes a stoppage in the play, some rained out games, it always depends whether they were making a comeback. it does have an impact if

the presidential election and four days removed from hurricane sandy, one of the worst storms ever to hit this country. the death toll now stands at 94. there are still 4.6 million homes and businesses without power. and the new estimate for economic damage to say nothing of all the property damage is $50 billion. "the new york times" reporting the storm could shave half a percentage point off the country's gdp. for most of the northeast, it's now a recovery mission. and yesterday california military planes were loaded with utility vehicles ready to be shipped into new york. an army of some 50,000 utility workers from across the country, even canada, being deployed to the region to help in the massive project to restore power which will take weeks. three navy warships are anchored off the northeast coast to help with the relief effort. in new jersey, military trucks are being deployed to operate as polling places on election day in the hardest-hit communities still remain without power. now, the good news does trickle out slowly. today amtrak will begin offering limited service between ne

, the very latest on hurricane sandy. we'll get to the hurricane in just a moment, though. let's go to the political headlines. we'll come back to hurricane sandy in just a few moments. both campaigns in a battleground blitz of sorts ahead of the last full week of campaigning. three major events this hour. governor romney expected to speak at his second event of the day here in florida. this time in kissimmee, florida. he is also rescheduling three stops that he had in virginia. those stops are planned for tomorrow. he is rescheduling them ahead of hurricane sandy. he will be campaigning in ohio instead. meanwhile, a rapid response from the governor's campaign after the president describing his opponent's economic plan like this during a stop in new hampshire this afternoon -- >> folks at the very top get to play by a different set of rules than you do. they get to pay lower tax rates, outsource jobs. they want to let wall street run wild, make reckless bets with other folks' money. >> the romney campaign responded saying, quote, today's desperate attacks are laughable coming from a

>>> all right. we asked you for what you're seeing with hurricane sandy. what did you get? >> sherry says up watching she from the airport in san francisco, can't get a flight home. these pictures are breaking my heart. and i'm watching from africa, visiting family here, trying to make sure that everyone at home is okay. >> unfortunately, we don't know yet. we hope everyone is okay. we've heard 16 deaths so far, that spans from north carolina up to connecticut. we're still wading through it all, tower. >> twitter was wild yesterday, watching everything unfold from people in new york. you actually tweeted out, a shot at one of the transformer explosions on manhattan's side. >> yeah, bill karins was talking about this. i was outside at about 9:00 last night at riverside park on the west side of manhattan, what you're looking at in the foreground is the hudson river looking across to new jersey. that was one of the transformer or power station explosions. you saw them about every ten minutes, some of them were white, some of them were green, some of them were red and then you

on today. it's been nearly four days since superstorm sandy slammed into the east coast and this morning in many areas, it is still a dire situation. the death toll from the storm has been raised to 92 people in the u.s. 3.5 million customers along the eastern seaboard are still without power this morning. and the economic losses are just staggering. an estimated $30 billion to $50 billion. right now rescue agencies are trying to get food and water to those in need. gasoline, in very short supply in parts of new york and new jersey. long, long lines. now a common sight at many gas stations in the region. people waiting two, three, four hours to get to the pumps. sometimes just to find there's no gas left and yes anger is starting to spill over. some gas station owners have been closing their businesses to let tempers cool down. they're calling in police for help. it's not a good situation. homeland security secretary janet napolitano and top fema officials will visit staten island today to get a look at the devastation there caused by hurricane sandy. yesterday police found the bodies of

of "sandy". the death toll reached 92 and the focus on physical damage shifted to new jersey, where the monster storm blasted barrier islands and other waterside cities. the massive force of the storm's destruction along the jersey shore came fully into view today. town after town presented stark scenes of wrecked homes and boats, underscoring the long process of rebuilding that lies ahead. one of those towns was the long beach community north of atlantic city, where army national guard troops arrived to assist. >> a lot of devastation. the island has been hit very hard. from what i understand there is roughly 18,000 homes without power, there is severe gas leaks, so right now we are just trying to get everything together for the office of emergency management here and the different municipalities and just assist them with whatever needs they have going on. >> brown: and even three days later, some long beach residents still could not believe the power of the storm. >> this was the deepest water i have ever seen, in my lifetime of being here. i was 11 in the '62 storm and the water

headed decision. >> brian: people weighing up in the cold without power thanks to sandy. incredible images you are looking at are have from stat ten island, new york where the death toll has risen to 22. >> everything is replaceable. the people -- i can't replace my family. dave briggs joins us on the ground in staten island where it's still quite cold. what do you see. >> freezing. devastating here driving through the neighborhood. it's heart-breaking. i just spoke with the local police officer from the nypd. he rolled down his window and couldn't speak on camera. he had tears in his eyes just driving through this neighborhood. staten island is what one state senator calls ground zero for sandy damage. if you look around, you can find out why. what once was a very popular restaurant is utterly devastated. the street has been wiped out. there is a massive pit in front of that restaurant. power lines laying on the ground. entire neighborhoods have really been utterly destroyed. wiped away. you look at the sidewalks all over staten island. they are just lined with trash. think are lin

for a rescheduled event that he had to cancel tuesday to deal with hurricane sandy. then he is off to nevada, colorado and ohio. yesterday, obama toured the aftermath of hurricane sandy in new jersey along with governor chris christie who had nothing but kind words for the president. >> has worked incredibly closely with me. i cannot thank the president enough for his personal concern and compassion for our state and for the people of our state. >> the governor has said he has no intention of bringing romney to new jersey to survey the storm's damage. christie aides are denying any sort of rift with the romney campaign saying it is just about dealing with the storm and not about presidential politics. but one of the main political speculations here is that christie thinks romney has no chance of winning and he is setting himself up for a run in 2016. >>> romney has a good cause to be worried if the polls have anything to say about it. president obama is ahead six points in iowa. that's coming from the nbc news "wall street jo

of aftermath of hurricane sandy. he is sending -- >> we don't have any patience for bureaucracy. we don't have any patience for red tape. and we want to make sure that we are figuring out a way to get to yes as opposed to no when it comes to these problems. >> meanwhile, mitt romney also has his sights on several key swing states today, starting with new hampshire. >> you saw the differences between barack obama and me in those debates. i like those debates. i got to be honest. i mean, he says it has to be this way. i say it can't stay this way. he's offering excuses. i'm offering a plan. i can't wait to get started. >> mitt romney will also visit iowa and colorado today, running mate paul ryan already wrapped up an event today in ohio. he now heads to pennsylvania, virginia and florida. we have two new nbc wall street marist polls out for you. president obama holds a 6-point lead among likely voters in ohio. 51 to 45%. then in the sunshine state the president gets support of 49% from likely voters. mitt romney coming in with 47%. let's head to mentor, ohio where the president is holding a cam

've just experienced a terrible natural disaster here in the northeast with this hurricane sandy. and i want to just kind of appeal to the swing states... ohio iowa, any place in the southeast and the southwest actually that experienced a drought. you know, obama has our backs with regards to trying to fund any type of natural disaster. he's willing to take -- you know, whatever governmental resources applicable toward trying to make -- you know, to help us get through these tough times. i think about mitt romney. i think about what he did. he was all about -- with bain capital, he was about cut reduce retool and resell at a profit. >> stephanie: right. >> caller: is this the kind of guy you want as president of the united states who could actually do this in terms of a natural disaster? what would a natural disaster look like under mitt romney? >> stephanie: greg, thank you. how do you privatize fema? you're going to make disaster relief for profit? they'll be thinking about profit margin when people are in dire

not accurate. host: john prible, because of these hurricanes that we looked at earlier in 2004 and sandy, will those rates go up overall? guest: not as a result of this particular storm. what fema is currently doing and have been for about 10 years, they're undergoing a massive modernization project where they are going across the country using scientific and engineering models to remap. we had a caller earlier who said that the map was old and out of date. that will not be the case. so there will be changes to flood zones over the coming years if you cannot already had a change. you may have one coming in the next two years. but it will not be the result of a particular storm or particular flooding event. these policies are different than private insurance policies in that regard. for example, if you have an auto insurance policy and get into an accident and make a claim, your insurance premiums going forward may increase because of your history. the national flood insurance program does not quite work that way. in that individual storms or flooding events don't have a direct bearing on

. we begin tonight with breaking news. late new word on exactly where hurricane sandy is heading and just how powerful it might be if and when it hits the east coast. now, the storm has already claimed nearly two dozen lives in the caribbean as it heads north. could morph into something else entirely, part tropical weather system, part winter nor'easter, possibly lingering for days over the eastern seaboard. in other words, a super storm. that's what new york governor andrew cuomo is very worried about. he declared a statewide emergency this afternoon. emergency orders also in effect in pennsylvania, virginia, maryland and the district of columbia. a baltimore power company declaring 2,000 out of state linesmen, some from as far away as mexico. i'm always worried about overhyping a storm, especially this far in advance. let's just try to get the facts tonight from chad myers, who has late new information in the cnn weather center. what's the latest on this storm, because honestly, i'm not sure -- is this for real? because we hear so much hype about storms sometimes. >> you know,

on the upper east side of manhattan. he's not bothered about hurricane sandy. >> exactly. mayor bloomberg has done some good things here but also showed an incredible lack of understanding in trying to continue the marathon. you have some people here who have power, media power, financial power, political power, and they're looking at this and we're seeing how they view these developments. that's unfortunate what they think. >> i want to add something to that, because what i like about this i guess in the middle of the nonsense of political partisan ship is that it shows we still have it in us as americans when you see a democrat and a republican coming together from different sides of the aisle to solve an issue. we've had many issues. rrdless of who is president or not, there are issues in the economy, in the debt, and immigration, with the war, why couldn't we celebrate and see this as a sign of hope instead of trying to over dramatize it. it's really unfortunate, whether it is through twitter of powerful people or even us in the media, to not look at this and see the positive in it and tr
